Fortnite Is Adding A New Way To Show Off Your Skills

With Fortnite ‘s Battle Royale mode becoming a runaway success for Epic Games, it’s no surprise that the developers are continuing to provide lots of updates and new content to the game at regular intervals. In fact, the latest plans for the game will allow players to show off their skills in all new ways.

At this year’s GDC presentation (via Gamespot), Epic announced that there’s a new replay mode in the works for Fortnite . The new replay mode will allow players to capture their best moments online and then share them without having to stream the content live through services like Twitch or Mixer.

During this year’s Game Developers Conference Epic Games unveiled a video demonstration of the new replay system by inviting content creator Ali-A to the U.K., offices. He was given an opportunity to test out the feature ahead of everyone else.

So the way the replay system works is not too dissimilar from the replay feature in a game like Mario Kart 8. After the round ends you can go back in and check out the action from different angles using the camera tools.

The camera tools for Fortnite are designed to benefit both PC and home console users. You can easily cycle through camera modes by tapping ‘A’ on the Xbox controller or ‘X’ on the DualShock 4 . You can play or fast forward through the content using the ‘Y’ button or speed up or slow down the action using the up and down buttons on the digital pad.

You can also easily cycle through the different players in the match by using the left and right buttons on the digital pad.

You don’t have to just use the tracking mode. If you’re good enough with the camera angles and capturing shots, you can showcase your skills as an auteur by panning, using dolly shots, and capturing blocks just like a real filmmaker. You can also edit the way the cameras function by changing things like the focal length, the autofocus, the focal distance, and even the exposure.

Ali-A explained during the GDC demonstration that this opens up a whole new opportunity for creativity for content creators who play Fortnite, and it’s true. This is essentially just like the director mode in Rockstar Games’ GTA V , where players can capture footage and edit it to their heart’s content.

These sort of features are oftentimes used for things like machinima and creating stories and character-driven content, sort of like back in the day when similar tools were used to create Red Vs Blue all those years ago in Halo .

This is Epic giving a one-up to PUBG Corporation, which mostly relies on its replay function for catching cheaters in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Epic appears to want to expand beyond the utilitarian functionality of the replay mode, and give gamers some creative to muck around with in Fortnite .

There is no release date on when the replay tool will become available, but the tool suite will be included in the Unreal Engine 4.20 update, so expect it to launch in Fortnite around the exact same time for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
